Taking Advantage of Childcare Leave - The Benefits of Workplace Reform
The Fukushima Koriyama Plant is working to increase awareness of the benefits of childcare leave for male employees and encourage male employees to take full advantage of the system.
By sharing the voices of partners who have taken childcare leave, we are increasing the cultural acceptance of childcare leave for male employees, broadening male employees' understanding of the importance of taking childcare leave, and helping them to use it most effectively.
Outline of the initiative
Instituted in October 2022, this initiative shares experiences gleaned from a survey of spouses of employees who have taken childcare leave. The survey asked for information on how employees spent their time during childcare leave and their feelings about the benefits of childcare leave. This initiative has been particularly effective in raising awareness of paternity leave.

Effects and advantages
Many of the partners of employees who have taken childcare leave expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to create a better balance between childcare and work, and commented that childcare leave has encouraged the sharing of roles within the family.
What's more, many male employees who are considering using childcare leave say that the psychological hurdle to applying for childcare leave has been lowered by learning how beneficial the system is to their individual lifestyles and family environment.
This has worked to increase awareness of the benefits of childcare leave by helping male employees to get a concrete image of what it's like to be able to spend quality time with their family after the birth of their child. The result has been an increase in the number of employees actively using the system.
The increase in awareness of paternity leave has been a major achievement.

A system that allows employees to accumulate up to 20 days of unused annual paid leave. Available for a wide range of uses.

The Fukushima Koriyama Plant initiative is an important step toward ensuring that the entire workplace understands the significance of participating in childcare and encouraging employees to take advantage of the system with peace of mind. It is expected that the spread of initiatives such as this will lead to greater awareness of the benefits of balancing work and childcare as well as foster a culture of mutual support.
